The city recently secured a whopping $2.5 million in state funding to build a brand new public safety facility. Just two years ago, Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc, destroying the previous building that housed both the fire rescue and police departments. It was a one-story structure built back in 1957 and was already overdue for an upgrade before the storm hit.

The old facility took on about three feet of water, leading to what Fire Chief Trip Barrs described as a total loss—furniture and paperwork were scattered everywhere. In the aftermath, first responders have had to make do with portable trailers and temporary aluminum bays, along with some donated classrooms from the school board. Not exactly the most ideal working conditions for those who risk their lives to keep us safe!
A New Dawn for Public Safety
Now, with the new facility on the horizon, there’s a palpable sense of hope in the air. The new building will be a substantial upgrade at 12,000 square feet, boasting three floors designed to foster efficient shared use. It’ll include office and living spaces elevated 22 feet to meet flood requirements—just in case Mother Nature decides to throw another tantrum. And speaking of resilience, the building must meet stringent Category 5 hurricane specifications, which means it will have stronger concrete walls and a sturdier foundation.
What’s in store for the layout? Well, the first floor will feature fire truck bays, the second will house the fire station, and the police department will take up residence on the third floor. This design not only makes practical sense but also aims to create a more functional environment for our first responders. Construction will take place on 108th Avenue, just down the street from the original site, which is kind of nice for those who have been around the area for a while.
But wait, there’s more! This $2.5 million allocation supplements an earlier $1.5 million the city received last year, bringing the total funding to $4 million so far. Even with that, the estimated costs for the new facility could range from $800 to $1,000 per square foot, potentially totaling around $12 million. Yikes! But hey, when it comes to safety, it’s worth every penny, right?

As of now, the project is still in the design phase, with plans to present the designs to the City Commission and the public soon—hopefully within the next month or two. There’s a goal to have our dedicated first responders moved into the new facility by January 2028.
